JPG to WebP: converting your images the smart way

JPG to WebP conversion usually cuts file size by a quarter or more with no visible loss. Here is when to do it, when to skip it, and how I actually do it.

Why bother with JPG to WebP conversion?

Short version: WebP files are smaller. Same photo, same look, noticeably less weight — usually 25 to 35 percent less than the JPG you started with. If you run a website, that is faster pages for free. If you are just emailing family photos, that is fewer "attachment too large" errors.

I ignored the format for years, honestly. JPG worked, why learn anything new? Then I converted one folder as a test: 214 MB of JPGs became 148 MB of WebP. Nothing else changed. That was the moment the whole JPG to WebP thing stopped being a tech-blog topic and became a tool I actually use.

The size difference is not marketing fluff

WebP uses a more modern compression method than JPG, which is from the nineties. Old format, old math. For a typical photo, converting JPG to WebP at a comparable quality setting lands you around 25-35% smaller, and screenshots or flat graphics often shrink way more — sometimes by half.

One caution: the numbers depend on the image. A noisy, high-detail photo might only lose 15%. A clean screenshot can lose 70%. Convert one file first, compare, then batch the rest. Thirty seconds of checking beats a folder of disappointing results.

Quality: what you keep and what you lose

WebP is lossy by default, just like JPG, so converting means some information is discarded — but at reasonable quality settings (70-80 is a good range), you will not see it with your eyes. Side by side? Identical. Zoomed to 400%? Maybe a hair softer. Nobody zooms to 400%.

Here is a bonus most people miss: WebP also supports transparency. Your JPG cannot — JPG never had an alpha channel. So if you have ever wondered why your logo has an ugly white box around it, a JPG to WebP conversion can genuinely fix that.

Browser support: the old excuse is gone

Years ago the honest answer to "should I use WebP?" was "not yet, Safari drags its feet". That era is over. Every current browser — Chrome, Firefox, Safari, Edge, the lot — renders WebP fine, so you can run the JPG to WebP conversion and move on without a compatibility spreadsheet. Phones too.

The remaining edge cases are desktop apps: some old photo editors, certain Windows viewers, that one printer driver from 2015. If your file is staying on the web, convert away. If it needs to open in your uncle’s ancient software, keep a JPG copy. Storage is cheap; arguments about broken files are not.

When you should skip the JPG to WebP step

Three cases where I would not bother. First, files you will keep editing — every lossy conversion (JPG to WebP included) throws away detail, and stacking conversions stacks the damage. Second, files destined for old software or hardware, see above. Third, when the JPG is already tiny — converting a 40 KB thumbnail saves maybe 12 KB, which is not worth a second of your time.

Also skip it for images you will print at high quality. Print workflows still speak JPG best. Web, screen, email, apps? Convert happily.

My actual workflow

I keep it boring on purpose. Open the browser tool, drop the images in, set quality to about 75, convert, spot-check two or three results, done. The whole JPG to WebP pass for a typical photo batch takes under a minute because it runs right in the browser — no upload wait, no account, no watermarks.

One last tip from painful experience: do not delete your JPG originals right away. Keep them in a folder for a month. If some app or client chokes on WebP down the line, you will be glad the source files are still sitting there.
